A Sydney woman named Carolyn has become the first person in Australia buried in a coffin made with mushroom material. The Guardian and the Sydney Morning Herald reported the details on September 7.
The coffin is made from mycelium, the underlying network of fungi. It decomposes quickly and feeds the soil. People in the funeral industry note that more Australians are currently seeking greener funeral options, outside of standard graves or cremation arrangements.
