Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre criticized Democratic Party leaders for what she called a "big mistake" in failing to endorse New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani during the primaries.
Speaking with radio host Dean Obeidallah on Wednesday, Jean-Pierre celebrated Mamdani’s election victory and commended him for motivating young voters in an off-year election. She emphasized his ability to connect with people despite facing two major political opponents in the primary race.
“I mean, he was the nominee, the Democratic nominee for the mayor’s race, and they’re basically saying, ‘No, voters are wrong. We don’t want him,’” Jean-Pierre said.
Jean-Pierre argued that Democratic leaders sent the wrong signal by hesitating or refusing to back Mamdani. She warned that such actions discourage young citizens the party needs to engage.
“And I thought it was a mistake. I think it was a big mistake that leadership didn’t get behind him. I thought it was a big mistake that they turned their backs on him because he did it the right way,” she added.
Jean-Pierre suggested that Mamdani’s success reflected voter engagement and authentic campaigning rather than institutional party support, offering a lesson for party leadership.
