Broncos’ JL Skinner ready for the moment with game-changing blocked punt vs. Raiders
Late in the third quarter, JL Skinner broke through the line and blocked AJ Cole’s punt with his helmet, setting up the Broncos for a decisive field goal in their tight 10-7 win over the Raiders on Thursday at Empower Field.
The play sealed a gritty victory and marked one of the most impactful moments of the third-year pro’s career. It also validated special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi’s decision to move Skinner from the outside to an interior position on the line to leverage his 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame and physicality.
“That’s something I’ve been working on all week at practice — taking advantage of that tackle and trying to get off the ball fast,” Skinner said. “I was thinking about that play all day.”
With 1:36 remaining in the third quarter and the Raiders facing fourth-and-16 from their own 14-yard line in a tied game, Skinner lined up inside of Devon Key on the right side. Using a drive-and-crank move, he powered through traffic, split two blockers engaged elsewhere, and lunged forward to block Cole’s punt — a moment that turned the momentum completely in Denver’s favor.
