Olivier Rioux, standing 7-foot-9, made his eagerly awaited debut for the University of Florida against North Florida, becoming the tallest player ever to compete in college basketball.
During the Gators' commanding 104-64 victory, a crowd of approximately 10,065 chanted “Oli, Oli, Oli” in support of Rioux, the tallest teenager in the world and a fan favorite since arriving in summer 2024. With UF leading 102-61 and just over two minutes left, Coach Todd Golden finally sent him onto the court.
“It felt great. The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful,” said the 19-year-old Canadian.
Although Rioux didn’t score or record a rebound, his appearance made history by surpassing the previous tallest player, Kenny George, who was 7-foot-7 and played for UNC Asheville from 2006 to 2008.
“It’s another day, I guess,” Rioux said, a figure of curiosity on campus regularly stopped for photos and conversations.
Rioux’s teammates, especially his close friend Micah Handlogten, were thrilled to see him finally take the court.
“So much fun. When he was checking into the game, I kind of stopped him and was like, ‘Play with confidence,’” said Handlogten, who at 7-foot-1 still feels small next to Rioux.
Rioux’s debut marks a significant milestone in college basketball, celebrated by fans and teammates alike.
