Drugs Mule Lindsay Sandiford Faces Return to Prison

Yesterday, 69-year-old grandmother Lindsay Sandiford was photographed in a wheelchair leaving Kerobokan Prison in Bali, Indonesia. She was convicted of smuggling £1.6 million worth of cocaine from Bangkok and spent 12 years on death row.

Indonesian officials have indicated that Sandiford could be sent straight back to prison upon her arrival in the UK. When asked about her future in Britain, Indonesia's deputy minister for immigration and correctional coordination stated:

“In England, she will remain in prison.”

Britain's Foreign Office has not yet confirmed or denied this statement by I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram.

Return to Britain and Transfer Details

Sandiford left her cell shortly after 2pm GMT, accompanied by fellow British inmate Shahab Shahabadi, 35, who is serving a life sentence for drug offences. The two were briefly shown to local media before British diplomats took custody of them at Denpasar International Airport.

Wearing a face mask and shielding her face from photographers, Sandiford boarded a Qatar Airways flight to London via Doha. Notably, the same airport was where she was publicly displayed in 2012 wearing orange prison clothes beside a large quantity of cocaine.

Summary

Lindsay Sandiford, after 12 years on Bali's death row for cocaine smuggling, faces immediate imprisonment upon her return to the UK, underscoring the ongoing legal consequences of her drug offenses abroad.
