Manchester United prospect James Overy has been named in Australia's squad for upcoming friendlies against Colombia and Venezuela. Head coach Tony Popovic also welcomed the return of midfielders Jackson Irvine and Riley McGree after recovering from injuries.
Overy, a 17-year-old full-back who joined United’s academy last year, has not yet played senior football in the Premier League. He was, however, a member of Australia's team at the recent under-20 World Cup.
Born in Perth, the young defender is one of seven uncapped players in the 26-man squad announced on Friday, as Popovic aims to strengthen his roster ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Australia will face Venezuela in Houston on November 14 and Colombia in New York on November 18, with the latter already qualified for the World Cup.
Germany-based midfielder Jackson Irvine rejoins the national team after an eight-month absence following foot surgery and a quadriceps injury. Riley McGree also returns after a recovery period.
“Popovic looks to build depth in the second-last international window before the 2026 World Cup in North America.”
Popovic brings youthful energy to the Socceroos, adding seven fresh faces to test new talent before the 2026 World Cup push.
