Contract Awarded to Study Feasibility of Hwy. 401 Tunnel

The Ontario government, led by Premier Doug Ford, is moving forward with its plans to construct a tunnel under Highway 401 in the Greater Toronto Area.

According to The Canadian Press, the province has allocated $9.1 million for a feasibility study, and WSP Canada Inc. has been awarded the contract following a request for proposals issued earlier in the year.

“Our government is making significant progress on the transformational project to build a tunnel under Hwy. 401 that will get people and goods moving across the province faster,” — Dakota Brasier, spokesperson for Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria

The proposed tunnel would be approximately 20 meters wide and feature three levels: one for eastbound traffic, one for westbound traffic, and one dedicated to transit.

Premier Ford reaffirmed during the summer that his administration remains fully committed to advancing the tunnel project, describing it as a key step toward improving transportation efficiency across Ontario.
