Walter James Jestings passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 92 years old, surrounded by loved ones and great music. He was born on February 3, 1933, to Charles Stewart Jestings Sr. and Christie Gertrude Jestings in Newport, Rhode Island, a place deeply cherished by his family.
Walter will be deeply missed by his three children:
His grandchildren include Madison Collins (John Collins), Alexandria Brown, Dezmond Brown, and Luke Phillips. His great-grandchildren—Walter Collins, Ollie Collins, and Cormac Collins—affectionately called him Grandpa Wallet and Popqua. Walter is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Newport and beyond.
Walter graduated top of his class from the University of Rhode Island. He had a distinguished career in civil engineering and bridge design, culminating as Chief of the Bridge Bureau. Colleagues respected him for his fairness, respectfulness, and unmatched work ethic.
Walter was happily married for 47 years to his hometown sweetheart, Sallye Ann Kendall, until her passing in 1996. Together, they lived in Newport, Rhode Island; Columbus, Ohio; and Atlanta, Georgia.
