The Illawarra Hawks have returned to winning form, though many supporters remain guarded. After the defending NBL champions’ emphatic victory over Melbourne United, optimism appears to be creeping back among the fan base.
The triumph over the league leaders came just days after the Hawks recorded an all-time low score in their 48-year history. The sharp contrast in performances stirred intense reactions from the fans.
“Frauds, so lame, there is only one spot they deserve with the effort, and that is the wooden spoon, this is embarrassing, and bring back Trey Kell III.”
These comments followed the humiliating 102–60 Halloween loss to the New Zealand Breakers. Yet, only five nights later, the tone among supporters had transformed as the Hawks dominated United at the same WIN Entertainment Centre where they claimed their second NBL title earlier this year.
Though Wednesday’s crowd was smaller than at the Championship Series Game 5 decider, around three thousand fans created an electrifying atmosphere. The team, led by coach Justin Tatum, showed a renewed spirit and determination, securing a vital 107–93 victory that keeps their championship defense alive.
Standout performances came from JaVale McGee, point guard Will "Davo" Hickey, and new import Quentin Peterson. With Hickey back from injury and Peterson adapting quickly, the Hawks seem poised for a stronger run in the coming games.
The Hawks’ rebound victory reignited faith among Illawarra fans, hinting that their title defense still holds promise after early-season struggles.
