USCRI Deeply Alarmed by DHS Decision to Terminate TPS for South Sudan Amid Escalating Violence and Humanitarian Crisis - USCRI

USCRI Deeply Concerned by DHS Termination of TPS for South Sudan and Syria

Arlington, VA — November 7, 2025 — The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) expressed deep concern over the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for South Sudan, effective January 5, 2026, and for Syria, effective November 21, 2025.

“The termination of TPS comes as people in these countries continue to face severe violence, instability, and humanitarian suffering,” USCRI stated.

USCRI emphasized that ongoing conflicts and worsening humanitarian conditions make it unsafe for displaced individuals to return home. The organization urged the U.S. government to reconsider the decision and maintain protection for vulnerable populations until stability is restored.

“We are profoundly concerned that the end of TPS will endanger thousands who have already lost everything,” the statement added.

The committee also highlighted the broader implications of these policies on regional stability, particularly in areas like Kenya’s refugee camps, where overcrowding and scarce resources worsen the crisis.
