The new season of the BBC drama Return to Paradise promises a deeper look into Detective Senior Constable Colin Cartwright’s story. Actor Lloyd Griffith revealed that viewers will finally learn more about his character’s past and the motivations behind his move from the UK to Australia.
The series, a spin-off from the hit show Death in Paradise, first premiered last year. It stars Anna Samson as Detective Inspector Mackenzie Clarke, who left London’s Metropolitan Police to return to her hometown of Dolphin Cove, Australia, where she leads new investigations.

In the second series, which began last week, Colin’s background in Lincolnshire and the personal reasons for his relocation are explored in detail. Lloyd Griffith elaborated:
“You get to see a bit of Colin's backstory in this series, including why he moved to Australia and why he left the UK, with those two questions being closely linked.”
He added that fans will also get glimpses of Colin’s life before his move — including his family and friends back home.
Mackenzie’s return
At the end of the first season, Mackenzie seemed poised to return to London. However, she ultimately decides to remain in Dolphin Cove for a new chapter. Lloyd shared more about his character’s reaction:
“In series two, Colin is sad to see Mackenzie presumably leave, because he has learned so much from her over the course of series one. He’s genuinely happy when she returns, but not just because she’s his colleague, but because he’s got his friend back.”
