Washington Co. commissioners terminate economic development contract with chamber

Washington County Ends Economic Development Contract with Chamber

The Washington County commissioners voted to terminate an 11-year contract with the county’s Chamber of Commerce, which was intended to provide $1.6 million for regional economic development.

Decision Details

During Thursday’s regular meeting, Commissioners Nick Sherman and Electra Janis supported ending the agreement that had been approved two years ago, while Commissioner Larry Maggi opposed the move.

Reasons for Termination

County officials cited concerns that the long-term deal for government services was not legally valid and claimed that the Chamber failed to meet certain contractual conditions.

Officials stated that the ongoing budget impasse contributed to the decision, describing the termination as a necessary cost-saving measure.

The county was expected to pay $148,526 in the upcoming year; however, the termination will only take effect in January.

Background on the Contract

In September 2023, Maggi and former commission chairwoman Diana Irey Vaughan approved the 11-year agreement, which included a clause allowing the county to opt out after five years. Commissioner Sherman had been critical of the contract from the start, expressing his desire to end it.

Author’s summary: Washington County officials canceled a multimillion-dollar development deal with the Chamber citing legal concerns, budget strain, and unmet obligations.
