Roma are contemplating ending forward Evan Ferguson’s loan from Brighton & Hove Albion ahead of schedule in January after a challenging start to his spell at the club.
The 21-year-old Irish international, signed on a costly loan this summer, has yet to score or assist a goal. Doubts have grown internally about his form and mental readiness, especially after a serious knee ligament injury 18 months ago.
The issue worsened publicly due to a clash between Roma and the Irish national team regarding Ferguson’s health. Roma’s medical team deems him injured, sidelining him with a right ankle sprain suffered in the match against Parma on October 29.
Manager Gian Piero Gasperini confirmed Ferguson is not sufficiently fit for Roma’s upcoming European game against Rangers and expects him to return after the international break.
Despite Roma’s position, Ireland’s coach Hallgrímsson included Ferguson in the squad for vital World Cup play-off matches against Portugal and Hungary, aiming to personally evaluate his fitness and potentially utilize him in the second game.
