Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings faced backlash from online communities after an October 24 episode included a clue about the viral meme character John Pork, mistakenly described as "AI-generated."
John Pork, a figure with a pig's head and a human body, has appeared on Instagram and TikTok since at least 2018. The character gained popularity well before the recent rise of generative AI content.
During the episode's category “Daddy, Is There Really A…”, the clue sparked criticism from viewers who pointed out that John Pork was not created by AI. Some reacted strongly, fueled by the mislabeling.
“When we played a clue recently on Jeopardy! on John Pork, I remarked that I didn’t understand a word of it,” Jennings said in a video apology on social media.
Jennings confessed he did not understand the reference at the time of filming, reflecting that recognizing such niche memes demands being deeply engaged online.
Although John Pork is currently considered "deceased" in meme culture for unclear reasons, the character remains a lingering presence on the internet, outlasting trends like AI content.
“He’ll probably still be lurking in some corner of the internet when AI has been replaced by our one true robot overlord: an air fryer that also folds laundry and does jury duty.”
This episode highlights the gap between mainstream media knowledge and internet meme culture, showing how a small error can spark widespread online debate.
