What’s Happening for Remembrance Day in Niagara-on-the-Lake

The time is approaching when all of Canada will pause to honour the soldiers who have fought and continue to fight to protect the country and its people—from the First World War, the Second World War, and beyond.

Businesses throughout Niagara-on-the-Lake are offering poppies, and residents proudly wear them on their jackets and shirts. Poppy displays are visible around the community at locations such as the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum, the Historic Court House, the RiverBrink Art Museum, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124 on King Street.

Poppy Drive and Community Efforts

The museum’s poppy drive started in October, with staff placing 75 poppy wreaths throughout the heritage district. Al Howse, president of the legion, shared that members have been actively preparing for the commemorations.

“Everything,” he said with a laugh, “we accept donations at that time for our poppy trust fund to support veterans and their families.”

The legion’s poppy drive began on October 11, with members collecting donations and distributing poppies in the streets. Poppies are available in 200 local businesses, and thousands have already been handed out.

Upcoming Commemorative Events

A variety of Remembrance Day events will take place in Niagara-on-the-Lake leading up to and on November 11, honouring veterans and their sacrifices.
