Former d'Entremont staff member calls floor-crossing 'a slap in the face'

Former Staffer Criticizes MP's Party Switch

Brian Hirtle described Acadie-Annapolis MP Chris d’Entremont’s move to join the Liberal Party as "self-serving" and a betrayal to the community that supported him.

Shock and Disappointment

Hirtle, a Viewmount resident, worked closely with d’Entremont throughout his three federal election victories and served as the Conservative MP’s electoral district association president before retiring six months ago. He said he was stunned when news broke about the floor-crossing.

“I woke up from a nap and the phone lit up everywhere. It was all over the news that he was considering it. I was as shocked as anybody.”

Community Effort Undermined

Hirtle emphasized the collective effort behind d’Entremont’s success, suggesting the MP’s switch undermines the hard work of many residents.

“It’s a slap in the face to the residents. It takes a village to get an MP elected. It takes a community of hard-working folks from Argyle to Long Point Road. It’s a team effort.”

He expressed pride in having helped hold the only Conservative seat in Nova Scotia, saying the MP "gave it away" by changing parties.

Impact on Supporters and Relationship

Though colleagues and friends, Hirtle is uncertain how their relationship will evolve after the switch.

He also mentioned younger voters who supported d’Entremont for the first time in April feeling deeply betrayed.

“He feels very betrayed.”

Author's summary: Brian Hirtle condemns Chris d’Entremont’s decision to join the Liberals as a betrayal to the community and loyal supporters who worked hard to get him elected.
