Bryant Brown, a former employee at Boundary County jail, faces aggravated battery charges after authorities allege he assaulted an inmate in January 2023. The charges were officially filed in September.
A preliminary hearing for Brown, 37, is scheduled for November 17 at the Boundary County Courthouse. Two prior hearing dates were canceled without explanation. Brown’s bond was set at $50,000 and has been posted. He has not entered a plea yet.
The incident occurred on January 3, 2023, involving an inmate arrested by Bonners Ferry Police Department who was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant from Kootenai County. The Herald does not disclose victim names in criminal cases.
According to a probable cause affidavit by Sheriff’s Detective Brandon Blackmore, the inmate was intoxicated and verbally abusive toward jail staff. After a heated verbal exchange with Brown, the inmate entered his holding cell.
"Brown shoved the man against a glass window inside the cell and struck him with a fist, causing his head to hit a brick wall in the cell."
The inmate reportedly tried to grab Brown’s arms to stop the blows but did not otherwise resist. The affidavit further alleges:
"Brown then grabbed the man’s throat with both hands and slammed his head into the brick wall."
This case highlights serious allegations of inmate abuse involving a detention staff member, now under legal scrutiny as proceedings continue.
