John Swan, known as Swanee, 73, the older brother of Jimmy Barnes, paved the way for their musical family. He has recently spoken about his past challenges, including trauma and drug use, as well as his relationship with his famous sibling and the shadow it cast over him.
“Not many people touch on it, and I think they're just polite,”
Swanee said, acknowledging the unspoken dynamics in their relationship.
Despite the natural comparisons, Swanee has always remained close to and proud of all his siblings, never feeling threatened by perceived rivalry.
“I didn't really give a stuff, because I got offered the gig before he did,”
he explained regarding their early musical opportunities.
Swanee chose to continue drumming for his band as he earned "$25 a week" and "couldn't afford to lose that money." He was stunned to hear musicians Mossy (Ian Moss) and Steve Prestwich starting to gain attention.
Though he joined Jimmy's band as a singer six months after its formation, Swanee soon realized his presence was no longer essential.
“I was smart enough to realise that this band doesn't need me,”
he reflected.
Swanee later achieved success as a solo artist and joined other bands, including replacing Angry Anderson in The Party Boys, with whom he had a number one hit.
John Swan, while living in the shadow of his famous brother Jimmy Barnes, built a notable music career defined by resilience and pride in family.
