Darvin Ham, former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, has spoken openly about his time coaching Russell Westbrook during their tenure together in Los Angeles. Despite occasional disagreements, Ham expressed high regard for Westbrook’s professionalism and dedication.
In a recent “Hoop Genius” podcast appearance, Ham shared insights into coaching Westbrook and having him in the locker room. He praised Westbrook for maintaining top physical condition and consistently refining his skills across his long NBA career.
“Russ is one of the most professional guys I’ve ever been around. That’s why he’s still playing. I think this is his 18th season at the position he plays. He stays at a very high level in terms of conditioning and constantly works on his craft. All of his teammates, wherever he’s played, always have nothing but the utmost respect and love for him.”
Ham emphasized that his role as head coach was to find ways to make the team function smoothly, but he acknowledged that locker room dynamics and personal chemistry among players are beyond his control.
Besides discussing Westbrook, Ham also reflected on his coaching stint with the Lakers, noting his limitations in delivering greater success apart from winning an NBA Cup.
Darvin Ham respects Russell Westbrook’s professionalism and contributions despite challenges, highlighting the complexities of coaching and team chemistry.
