Emmy Award-winning and Tony-nominated Eddie Izzard will bring her celebrated one-person show, The Tragedy of Hamlet, to the Sydney Opera House from June 10 to 21, 2026. Following sold-out performances in the US and UK, this production continues Izzard's unique theatrical approach.
Performing alone on a bare stage, Eddie will portray all 23 characters from Shakespeare's classic play. This minimalist setup echoes the original staging of Hamlet, focusing entirely on the power of Shakespeare's language and storytelling.
The show is adapted by Mark Izzard and directed by Selina Cadell.
"I have always gravitated towards playing complex and demanding characters. This production is for everyone – a timeless drama with an accidental hero."
Eddie aims to present a version of Hamlet that is accessible, emotional, intense, and dramatic, inviting audiences to experience the play in a fresh light.
"This is a rare opportunity for Sydney to experience Eddie’s dramatic flair. Her one-person rendering of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy offers audiences an intimate, engrossing performance. This is Eddie Izzard and Hamlet as you’ve never seen them before." – Harry Prouse, Acting Head of Contemporary Performance, Sydney Opera House
This will be Eddie Izzard’s second solo theater production after the highly praised Great Expectations, which enjoyed sold-out runs in New York and London.
The upcoming Hamlet production promises another memorable theatrical experience showcasing Izzard's exceptional talent.
Summary: Eddie Izzard returns with a powerful one-person performance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, bringing all characters to life on a bare stage at Sydney Opera House in June 2026.
