Sam Smith shared memories of being bullied about their weight during school years, a painful experience that led them to undergo liposuction at just 13 years old.
"I couldn't go swimming in school, and getting changed in the locker room was hell," the singer said.
In a conversation on the Podcrushed podcast with host Penn Badgley, Smith, who uses they/them pronouns, spoke honestly about struggling with body image as a child and seeking cosmetic surgery because of it.
"For me, it was always my weight," Smith said. "My weight as a kid was the hardest thing for me in school, and weirdly the thing I probably got teased the most about."
Smith explained that they had surgery on their chest at 13 due to teasing and discomfort with their appearance.
"There were all sorts of reasons why, but mainly that I was just getting so teased. So I got liposuction when I was 13 years old."
When asked how their parents reacted to the decision, Smith said their family was supportive.
"They were supportive," Smith replied.
