Singer Sam Smith shared that they underwent liposuction surgery at the age of 13 after being relentlessly bullied at school because of their weight. The artist, who identifies as non-binary and uses gender-neutral pronouns, spoke candidly about this experience on the Podcrushed podcast hosted by Penn Badgley.
Reflecting on their teenage years at a Catholic school in Hertfordshire, Sam described weight as the most difficult issue they faced — more challenging than their queerness, which they said they could handle better.
“Weirdly, my weight was the thing I probably got teased the most about,” Sam said. “I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old because I had a growing chest.”
They explained that constant teasing made activities like swimming or changing in the locker room unbearable, prompting the decision to have liposuction.
“My parents were hugely supportive of the whole thing because they just saw how much it was crippling everything about me,” Smith shared.
Despite the early surgery, Sam admitted that it didn’t ultimately resolve their struggles with body image.
“The surgery wasn’t a success because I just love food,” they added with honesty.
At 13, Sam Smith faced harsh bullying over their body and underwent liposuction, sharing that the pain of ridicule shaped their early understanding of identity and self-image.
