After a 3-2 loss to Nathan MacKinnon’s Colorado Avalanche, Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper sent a strong message to his team. The defeat snapped Tampa Bay’s five-game winning streak and marked their first loss since October 23 of the 2025-26 NHL season.
The Lightning started the game well, dominating the first period. However, they struggled in the later stages, allowing Colorado to rally and secure both points at home in Denver.
"It was good for a bit, and then we got in our own way. And when we get in our own way, it’s usually going to be tough for us," said Jon Cooper, via NHL.com. "It was unfortunate that we took untimely penalties. They were the better team for periods two and three. That was disappointing."
Despite the loss, the result is not alarming for Tampa Bay. Colorado currently sits atop the NHL standings with 21 points through 14 games, led by MacKinnon’s stellar play. Tampa Bay holds 14 points, placing them fifth in the Atlantic Division as the season continues.
Jon Cooper urged focus and discipline after Tampa Bay’s 3-2 loss to Colorado, calling for the Lightning to avoid self-inflicted mistakes that derail their strong starts.
