As the 2025–26 NHL season began, Calgary Flames fans were eager to see whether young defenseman Zayne Parekh could handle his first full year in the league. After debuting in the final game of the 2024–25 season against the Los Angeles Kings, where he scored his first goal and looked poised on the ice, the team faced a complex decision about his development.
Parekh was far too dominant for the OHL but not yet a sure fit for the NHL level, particularly following an inconsistent preseason. With eligibility rules preventing a demotion to the minors, the Flames had to choose between sending him back to junior hockey or continuing his challenging NHL transition.
Now ten games into his first professional season, Parekh’s time with the Flames has been a mix of learning and adjustment. The team has played fifteen games total, and Parekh has been scratched from several—two at the start of the season, two consecutive ones against the Ottawa Senators and Nashville Predators, and most recently one against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Despite these brief absences, Parekh’s overall play has been steady for a rookie defenseman. His only recorded point so far is an assist from a power play against the Winnipeg Jets, but his composure and adaptability on the ice have been notable signs of growth.
“Parekh was way too good for the OHL, but it was questionable if he was NHL-ready.”
Balancing development with competitive opportunities remains the Flames’ ongoing challenge regarding Parekh’s future this season.
After ten games, Zayne Parekh shows potential and maturity, though consistency and offensive production remain the key hurdles in his promising NHL journey.
