Rick Stein, a well-known chef, presenter, and restaurateur, has reflected on his fond memories of Swindon, a month after closing his only Wiltshire restaurant in Marlborough.
Stein, recognized for his chain of popular UK restaurants and numerous cookbooks, shut down his Marlborough venue on October 5. Shortly after, he postponed his theatre tour, which was scheduled to visit Swindon this winter.
Despite rising to fame alongside chefs like Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, the 78-year-old Stein revealed to the Swindon Advertiser that much of his early twenties was spent travelling weekly to Swindon.
"When I was a young lad and attending Oxford University, I used to come to Swindon every week to print the student newspaper called The Cherwell," Stein shared. "I haven't been to Swindon in many years and I should probably go back, but I do have very fond memories of it."
He added that the town always makes him think of the distinct smell of the printing press, which brings back those early days.
In the interview, Stein also talked about his new book and the tough economic conditions currently impacting pubs and restaurants.
The chef’s reflection offers a glimpse into the personal history behind his culinary success and his deep connection to the Swindon area.
