The next-generation Toyota Hilux has officially been unveiled at a global event in Thailand. This new model marks a major update to the renowned bakkie, expected to arrive in South African showrooms during 2026. While precise launch dates remain unconfirmed, the manufacturer has stated that local production will take place in South Africa.
Although not an entirely new design, the 2026 Hilux represents a significant upgrade built on the existing platform. The front and rear have been completely redesigned, creating a tougher and more modern look.
Beneath the hood, the Hilux keeps the trusted 2.8-litre GD-6 turbodiesel engine, producing 150 kW and 500 Nm. Selected variants also incorporate a 48V mild-hybrid system for improved efficiency. Transmission options remain a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox.
“The new Toyota Hilux will be built in South Africa, and the local manufacturer has confirmed that it will reach local showrooms during 2026.”
In Europe, the Hilux continues under the ‘Invincible’ specification, while South African editions will maintain similar configurations to the outgoing models.
The 2026 Toyota Hilux combines refined design with proven reliability, set for South African release in 2026 following its global debut in Thailand.
