The 9th-generation Toyota Hilux has been officially unveiled in Thailand, featuring updated styling, a revamped interior, and an electric vehicle (EV) option. The new model is built on the outgoing generation's platform with several improvements.
The Hilux holds special importance in South Africa, where it has been the best-selling vehicle overall for over 50 years since its introduction in 1969. It is also locally produced at Toyota SA Motors’ Prospecton plant in KwaZulu-Natal.
The new Hilux continues to use the outgoing generation's IMV platform, now enhanced with hydraulic engine mounts and shear-type cabin mounts aimed at reducing vibrations and improving ride comfort. Some familiar structural components, such as the doors, roof, and load bay, have been retained.
Dimensions, including the wheelbase, remain largely unchanged compared to the previous model.
The most notable design update is at the front, where most variants feature a new honeycomb-style grille inspired by the Corolla Cross, paired with sharper headlamp designs.
"The latest version of the bakkie retains the outgoing generation’s IMV platform, which gains new hydraulic engine mounts and shear-type cabin mounts to ‘reduce vibrations and enhance ride comfort.’"
Author's summary: The 9th-gen Toyota Hilux updates the proven platform with refreshed styling, improved comfort features, and introduces an EV variant, maintaining its iconic status in South Africa.
