How 'I Love LA' Star Josh Hutcherson Set His Boyfriend Character Apart: Didn't Want to 'Just Be the Square'

Josh Hutcherson on Building His Unique Role in “I Love LA”

Josh Hutcherson joined Rachel Sennott’s HBO comedy “I Love LA” later in production, stepping into a recast role after the pilot had already been filmed. Despite the late start, he worked closely with Sennott and co-showrunner Emma Barrie to reshape his character, Dylan, Maia’s long-term live-in boyfriend.

“We very quickly all got on the same page, which was we didn’t want Dylan to just be the square, the boring, nothing guy,” Hutcherson told TheWrap. “We wanted to find some textures to him that felt funny and dynamic and different, rather than something that we’ve seen before.”

Collaborating with the creative team, Hutcherson reimagined Dylan beyond the version initially portrayed by Miles Robbins in the pilot. They focused on understanding Dylan’s personality, motivations, and the reasons behind his relationship with Maia, enriching the role beyond what was written on the page.
