Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner Ian Leavers Dies Suddenly

Ian Leavers, Queensland’s cross-border commissioner, has passed away at his home. Police discovered him around 9:50 a.m. The death is not considered suspicious, though investigations continue.

Leavers leaves behind a decades-long legacy of dedicated service to policing and the state of Queensland. He was appointed cross-border commissioner in October 2024, tasked with supporting communities along Queensland’s borders. Before that, he had a distinguished career within the Queensland Police, joining in 1989. His roles included general duties, traffic, accident investigation, plainclothes work in the Criminal Investigation Branch, and the Child Protection Investigation Unit. He was also active as a trade unionist.
