Ian Leavers, former president of the Queensland Police Union, was found dead at his Brisbane residence just before 10 a.m. on Monday. He was 57 years old.
Leavers led the police union for 15 years, from 2009 to 2024. In August 2024, he was appointed the first Cross-Border Commissioner, supporting border communities in Queensland.
Police responded to a sudden death call at Mount Ommaney, Brisbane’s south-west, around 9:50 a.m. Authorities said the circumstances of his death were non-suspicious and investigations are ongoing.
“He earned the respect of Queenslanders for saying it how it was, and always standing up for the police service he loved,” said Premier David Crisafulli.
“He was dedicated, principled and driven to make a difference for this state,” Crisafulli added.
“Queenslanders will remember his leadership during some of our state’s most tragic and defining events,” the Premier noted.
The Police Federation of Australia described Leavers as a “long-serving and respected leader within the policing community for more than three decades.”
Ian Leavers was a committed and influential figure in Queensland policing, remembered for his leadership and dedication to the community.
