Mild start to November sees temperature records broken

Mild Start to November Breaks Temperature Records in the UK

The beginning of November 2025 has seen an extraordinary series of new daily minimum temperature records across the UK, with numerous weather stations reporting unusually warm overnight conditions. This streak of warmer nights comes after October, which was already marked by temperatures above the average.

October 2025 Weather Overview

October’s weather set the groundwork for November’s warmth. The provisional mean temperature for October was 0.7°C higher than the 1991–2020 average. Scotland and Northern Ireland recorded slightly warmer temperatures compared to other regions of the UK.

Cause of November Warmth

As November began, a southerly flow of warm air swept over the UK. This, combined with persistent cloudy skies, trapped heat overnight and resulted in exceptionally high daily minimum temperatures.

Definition of Daily Minimum Temperature

The daily minimum temperature is the lowest temperature recorded during a 24-hour period from 09:00 UTC to 09:00 UTC the next day. The date assigned to this temperature corresponds to the period's end date because the lowest temperature is usually detected in the early morning hours.

Record-Breaking Bonfire Night 2025

Temperatures overnight only dropped to 14.4℃ at Teddington in London, provisionally making it the mildest Bonfire Night on record.

The previous record for the night of November 5th to 6th was 13.9℃, set at Gordon Castle, Scotland, in 1938.
