Lake Tahoe issued water advisory over potential fecal contamination

Lake Tahoe Issues Boil-Water Advisory Due to Possible Fecal Contamination

Earlier this week, residents of the scenic Lake Tahoe community of Incline Village, known for its affluent population, were advised to boil their tap water following concerns of potential fecal contamination. The advisory was announced by local officials on Monday.

"Incline Village water system experienced an event that resulted in loss of pressure in the distribution system, which may cause backpressure or movement of water from outside the pipe to the inside through cracks, breaks, or joints in the distribution system."

Authorities warned that such a pressure loss carries a high risk that fecal matter or other harmful microorganisms could have entered the water supply. The issue reportedly originated from a water leak identified in October, which raised fears that untreated water containing fecal particles might have mixed with the town’s drinking supply.

Emergency crews immediately began repair operations, though several households experienced temporary disruptions in their water service. Officials emphasized that untreated water entering the system could contain bacteria like E. coli, known to cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, and cramping. In severe cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream and lead to life-threatening sepsis.
