The Edmonton Oilers face a crowded roster, which may signal the end of Troy Stecher’s time with the team. The 31-year-old defenseman could be on the move soon.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman wrote this week: "They are trying to get Troy Stecher a new opportunity."
Stecher has played for multiple NHL teams, including the Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Arizona Coyotes, Calgary Flames, and now the Oilers. His career has been marked by frequent moves.
Stecher joined Edmonton late in the 2023-24 season and stayed for the entire 2024-25 season. During that season, he played 66 games, scored three goals, and added four assists. Defensively, he blocked 66 shots and recorded 35 hits.
In the current season, Stecher has appeared in six games, all before October, averaging 13.5 minutes on ice per game but has yet to register a point.
It makes sense for both Stecher and the Oilers to explore new options. Sitting without playing time does not benefit the 31-year-old defenseman, nor does it help the team if he is not in their future plans.
"It doesn't do a 31-year old any good to sit and watch. It also doesn't do the Oilers any good if they know Stecher isn't part of their future plans."
Troy Stecher’s limited role with the Oilers amid a crowded lineup suggests a trade is likely, offering fresh opportunity for the veteran defenseman and roster flexibility for Edmonton.
