Authorities in southeast Melbourne are investigating a heartbreaking incident after a woman and a young child drowned in Dandenong Creek near Allan Street, Dandenong, around 3:45 p.m. on Monday.
According to police, the tragedy occurred when the mother entered the water in an effort to rescue the child but began struggling herself. Emergency services arrived quickly and found both unconscious in the creek.
Paramedics performed CPR at the scene but were unable to revive either victim. Both were pronounced dead shortly after.
Authorities have not yet formally identified the woman or the child. A report is being prepared for the coroner to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
Police believe the mother entered the water trying to save the child but was overcome by the conditions.
