New parking regulations are being implemented across the City of Canning, targeting schools, sporting venues, and key local areas. The council unanimously approved changes at its October 28 meeting, updating parking plans for nine sites and introducing new rules in five areas, including Willetton Basketball Stadium and George Street West in Cannington.
The updated regulations aim to improve both safety and access. They feature new bus zones, no stopping and no parking areas, a four-hour parking limit near Bentley Hospital, and stricter enforcement of existing signage at the Willetton Basketball Stadium.
The most debated change concerns a proposed no parking zone in the Mosaic Street West cul-de-sac in Shelley.
“This seriously compromised safety,” said Mosaic Street West resident Brendan Hewson during the meeting.
The city received three objections and one supporting submission during the public comment period. Additionally, a 16-signature petition requested the cul-de-sac have the same parking restrictions as Mosaic Street East. The original no parking zone, intended to allow vehicles to turn around in a single movement, was scaled back to permit two vehicles to park near the entrance.
The City of Canning introduces revised parking rules across schools, hospitals, and community areas to enhance safety and traffic flow, despite community concerns in select spots.
