Perth Zoo’s Last Elephant Arrives at New Home in South Australia

After an epic 42-and-a-half-hour journey, Perth Zoo’s final elephant, Putra Mas, reached his new home at Monarto Safari Park in South Australia. The 35-year-old elephant completed a remarkable 2,700 km trip—the longest overland trek for a fully grown elephant recorded.

Journey Details and Arrival

The convoy, led by zoo keeper Kaylee Martin, left Perth on Monday morning and drove almost nonstop through the night across the Nullarbor Plain. They arrived safely at Monarto Safari Park at 5:45 am Wednesday.

“We are very excited to say that this morning we have officially arrived with Putra Mas at Monarto Safari Park,” said Ms Martin. “It has been a mammoth journey… we drove pretty much non stop all through the night… and we have arrived here safe and sound.”

Support and Care During the Trip

The team kept Putra Mas comfortable throughout, stopping in regional towns for rest, refueling, and supplies. After clearing quarantine at the border, the convoy was greeted with a fresh supply of Putra Mas’s favorite foods—bamboo, bananas, and raisin bread—for his breakfast.

“Putra Mas was an absolute champion on the travels. We are so so proud of him, he did everything he was supposed to do,” Ms Martin added.

This extraordinary journey marks a significant transition for Perth Zoo’s beloved elephant, showcasing expert care and determination from his caretakers.
