President Donald Trump on Wednesday advised New York City's newly elected Mayor Zahran Mamdani to build a constructive relationship with Washington, warning that he could face significant consequences if he fails to cooperate.
In a conversation with Fox News host Bret Baier, Trump emphasized his readiness to talk with Mamdani but stressed that the mayor must respect federal support for New York City.
“His speech was filled with anger towards me, and I think he should be nice to me,” Trump said.
“I hope to see the new mayor achieve good results because I love the city,” he added.
Earlier the same day, during an economic conference in Miami, Florida, Trump commented on Mamdani’s election victory, suggesting that the United States had lost “some sovereignty” after the result and vowed to “address the issue.”
“We lost something of our sovereignty last night in New York, but we will address the issue,” Trump stated.
He described Mamdani, a Democrat of Indian origin and the first Muslim elected to lead America’s largest city, as representing a political shift. Trump urged the public to choose “between communism and common sense,” predicting that New York might soon become “a refuge for those fleeing communism.”
Trump urged Mayor Mamdani to cooperate with Washington, warning of political and financial risks if relations deteriorate, calling for respect and constructive governance for New York City.
