Bayern Munich winger Luis Diaz publicly apologized to Achraf Hakimi following a challenge that left the Paris Saint-Germain and Morocco defender injured during their Champions League match on Tuesday night at Parc des Princes.
The incident happened late in the first half of Bayern’s 2-1 victory over PSG in the fourth round of the group stage. Diaz, who had already scored twice, received a straight red card for a high-speed tackle on Hakimi near the touchline.
Hakimi was carried off the pitch on a stretcher, visibly in pain, while fans from both sides gave him a silent applause.
“I’m not happy despite the win and my goals. I want to apologize to my brother Achraf Hakimi. I never intended to hurt him. He was sprinting at incredible speed and I couldn’t find another way to stop him. Unfortunately, it ended with him injured and that makes me very sad. Hakimi is an unbelievable player — strong, quick and fearless.”
Diaz also shared a message on Instagram: “It was a night full of emotions. Football reminds us that in 90 minutes, anything can happen — the best or the worst.”
