Pacers Waive Dunk Champion to Re-Sign Veteran Guard

The Indiana Pacers have faced a rough start to the 2025–26 NBA season. After reaching the Finals last year, their momentum was derailed by Tyrese Haliburton’s Achilles injury, which left the team thin at point guard.

To fill the gap, Indiana brought in three-time Dunk Contest champion Mac McClung on a two-year, non-guaranteed contract. However, after just three appearances, the team decided to waive McClung and re-sign veteran guard Monte Morris.

“Morris was initially signed in the offseason but was released after a calf injury in September prevented him from competing during training camp.”

In limited action, McClung averaged 6.3 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game, shooting 38.9% from the field in 11.3 minutes per contest. His effort and energy helped temporarily stabilize the backcourt despite reduced playing time.

Still, the Pacers appear to favor a steadier hand at this stage. Monte Morris, an eight-year NBA veteran, previously thrived with the Denver Nuggets and spent last season with the Phoenix Suns, where he averaged 5.2 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game on 42% shooting.

Summary

The Pacers replaced energetic newcomer Mac McClung with seasoned guard Monte Morris to bolster their point guard depth following Tyrese Haliburton’s injury setback.
