The familiar rhythm of bouncing basketballs and sneakers on the hardwood has returned to local high schools this month as the boys’ basketball season begins. After achieving their best finish in program history last year, the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors are gearing up for another run at the state tournament.
Head coach Robert Brown shared that the team’s confidence remains high, fueled by their deep postseason experience. The Warriors made it to the state semifinals last season, finishing among the top four teams in Washington — a milestone that set a new benchmark for the program.
“Last year was special, but we’re not satisfied,” Brown said. “The players understand what it takes now — the discipline, the daily effort, the teamwork.”
Several key players are returning, including senior guard Marcus Taylor and forward Ethan Johnson. Their leadership, combined with the arrival of new talent from junior varsity and transfers, gives the Warriors both experience and depth. Assistant coach Mike Peterson noted that the team’s practices have been highly competitive.
“Every drill has energy,” Peterson said. “The younger guys are pushing the veterans, and everyone is hungry to get back to state.”
The Warriors will open their season next week against Shorewood High, a longtime rival. Coach Brown emphasized the importance of staying grounded and improving game by game, focusing on defense and ball movement as cornerstones of their style.
“We know expectations are higher,” Brown said. “But we’re focusing on playing the right way — the wins will take care of themselves.”
With a balanced roster, strong leadership, and a taste of recent success, Edmonds-Woodway enters the new season as a serious contender for another deep run in the state tournament.
