A strong majority of Germans want their country to host the Olympics again for the first time since 1972. The Munich area and the Rhine-Ruhr region lead preferences among four candidate cities.
A recent Forsa poll commissioned by Stern magazine found that 72% of respondents support holding the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Germany, targeting the years 2036, 2040, or 2044. Only 22% opposed the plan, with 6% undecided.
"Support was strong across age groups and political parties, including 71% favorability among typically skeptical Left Party and far-right Alternative for Germany supporters."
The German Olympic Sports Confederation is working to select a host city by autumn 2026. Four candidates remain in the race:
Among supporters nationwide, 39% preferred Munich, 24% backed Rhine-Ruhr, 15% chose Berlin, and 11% favored Hamburg. Locally, Berlin and Hamburg bids received relatively less enthusiasm compared to Munich and Rhine-Ruhr.
The survey included 1,008 adults and was conducted over two days at the end of October 2025.
Summary: Most Germans strongly support bringing the Summer Olympics back to their country, with Munich and Rhine-Ruhr emerging as the leading candidates to host the event after more than fifty years.
