Several people became ill at Joint Base Andrews, a US military base near Washington, following the delivery of a suspicious package containing an unknown white powder. The package was opened inside one of the base's buildings, which led to the evacuation of that building and a neighboring one.
“As a precaution, the building and connecting building (at the base) were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area,” said a statement from Joint Base Andrews.
The affected building also houses the Air National Guard Readiness Center. Joint Base Andrews is located in Maryland and is frequently used by US President Donald Trump for boarding flights to important engagements.
Several individuals showing symptoms were treated at the on-base Malcolm Grove Medical Center. First responders found no immediate threats and handed the investigation over to the Office of Special Investigations.
“Joint Base Andrews first responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats, and have turned the scene over to the Office of Special Investigations. An investigation is currently ongoing,” CNN reported.
