Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux from Alberta has announced his resignation from the House of Commons amid speculation that he might join the governing Liberals. The Edmonton Riverbend MP informed Conservative Party Whip Chris Warkentin on Thursday about his decision to step down, although he did not specify an exact date.
“It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one,” Jeneroux wrote in a letter obtained by National Post.
The letter makes little reference to party leader Pierre Poilievre but expresses respect for “the many remarkable individuals” on both sides of the House of Commons.
The news comes after a turbulent week for the Conservative Party, as it seeks to contain internal turmoil and rumors of defections.
Matt Jeneroux’s unexpected resignation underscores growing instability within the Conservative Party just months before a critical leadership review.
