Don Mattingly has decided to step down from his role as bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays but is not retiring from baseball. Mattingly spent three seasons with the Blue Jays, brought in to mentor John Schneider, who became Toronto's manager for the first time in 2022.
His contract with the team ended, and Mattingly felt his mission was complete after the Blue Jays won the AL East and reached Game 7 of the World Series, according to a source. He expressed gratitude to the Toronto leadership for entrusting him with meaningful responsibility.
Mattingly shared a close connection with Schneider, who is from Lawrence, New Jersey, and was a Yankees fan who admired Mattingly during his youth.
“I was close to that decision before the season even started,” Mattingly said after news of his departure was revealed.
Mattingly’s departure opens opportunities, as there are currently two managerial vacancies available in baseball.
Don Mattingly leaves the Blue Jays after fulfilling his role mentoring a rookie manager and contributing to a World Series appearance, while remaining open to future baseball opportunities.
