Veteran center David Kampf has temporarily stepped away from the AHL's Toronto Marlies to evaluate his future. During the offseason, the Maple Leafs tried to trade Kampf but no deal was made. As a result, he was waived in training camp and, after going unclaimed, assigned to the Marlies.
General Manager Brad Treliving signed the 30-year-old to a four-year, $9.6 million contract just over two years ago, so this outcome was unexpected. The initial plan was for Kampf to anchor the fourth line, contribute in faceoffs, and play on the penalty kill.
However, under coach Craig Berube last season, Kampf’s role diminished, with lower-cost players now filling his position. This season, he has appeared in only four of seven games for the Marlies and did not play on a recent road game in Chicago.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Kampf is currently taking a few days to consider his options.

In recent years, some players have given up guaranteed NHL money in hopes of better opportunities or a return to the league. Players like Conor Sheary, Brandon Saad, and Filip Zadina have taken this path. Kampf might be considering a similar decision, despite forfeiting more than $3 million owed in salary and signing bonus over this and next season.
David Kampf, once a steady NHL fourth-line center, is reevaluating his career after a reduced role and time in the AHL, weighing the possibility of leaving guaranteed salary to pursue better NHL opportunities.
