Dan Trachtenberg, known for reviving the Predator franchise, shared his vision for continuing Kevin Costner's controversial 1995 sci-fi film Waterworld. Ahead of the theatrical release of Predator: Badlands, the director spoke with Collider about his approach to a potential sequel.
Instead of a traditional movie sequel, Trachtenberg imagines Waterworld returning in the form of a video game. He expressed his desire for an open-world, third-person action-adventure game that serves as a sequel to the original film, rather than a remake.
"The thing about Waterworld that I want to see is a video game. I want to see an open-world third-person action-adventure video game that is not a remake of the movie, but is a sequel to the movie. That's what I want to see."
Trachtenberg’s idea follows a successful trend where video games act as official sequels to classic movies. An example is Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009), which takes place two years after the events of Ghostbusters II and features a new character trained by the original team to investigate paranormal events in New York City.
Trachtenberg’s approach to reviving Waterworld as a video game highlights a creative path that blends storytelling with interactive media.
