Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) affects thousands of people, often without being noticed, but it can cause long-term pain, scarring, and emotional distress.
Most people rarely pay much attention to their armpits beyond quick deodorant checks. However, this small, commonly overlooked area of skin is one of the body's busiest intersections. Beneath those folds lies a complex network of glands, nerves, and lymph nodes that help keep the body cool, fight infections, and even influence body odor.
For some, the armpit becomes the site of a distressing and recurrent condition called hidradenitis suppurativa. This condition causes chronic pain, infection, and scarring in areas where skin rubs together, including the armpit.
HS "can turn these hidden hollows and other areas where skin rubs together into a source of chronic pain, infection and scarring."
Though once thought rare, HS is now more frequently recognized and diagnosed, even though it remains widely misunderstood.
Several other conditions may also affect the tissues of the armpit, or axilla, as the area is anatomically known. Hidradenitis suppurativa is one of these ailments, despite its complex and confusing name.
