Mikie Sherrill, a Democratic congresswoman and former Navy helicopter pilot, is projected to become New Jersey’s next governor, defeating Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli, according to Decision Desk HQ.
Sherrill made history in 2018 by flipping a Republican-held congressional district in North New Jersey during President Donald Trump’s first term. She will be the second woman and the first Democratic woman to hold the governor’s office in the state’s history.
“We see how clearly important liberty is. We know that no one in our great state is safe when our neighbors are targeted, ignoring the law and the Constitution, but prosperity is equally essential,” she said.
“Liberty alone is not enough if the government makes it impossible for you to feed your family, to get a good education or to get a good job. In this country, that shouldn’t be too much to ask, but right now, all of it seems at risk. Governors have never mattered more, and in this state, I am determined to build prosperity for all of our citizens.”
Her campaign placed strong emphasis on economic issues, focusing on affordability, cost of living, and the role of leadership in addressing New Jersey’s challenges.
Mikie Sherrill’s victory reflects New Jersey voters’ ongoing concerns about the economy and governance, continuing a conversation that shaped the election season across the nation.
Sherrill’s win marks a milestone for New Jersey politics, highlighting her focus on liberty, equality, and economic opportunity for all residents.
