EAST BRUNSWICK — Voters delivered a decisive victory to Democrat Mikie Sherrill in the New Jersey governor’s race on Tuesday. Sherrill celebrated the win alongside hundreds of supporters at the Hilton East Brunswick Hotel, promising to defend the interests of New Jersey against federal policies that she said have hurt the state and others led by Democrats.
The four-term congresswoman and former federal prosecutor took the stage around 10 p.m. to loud chants of “Mikie! Mikie!” from the excited crowd. She announced that her Republican opponent, Jack Ciattarelli, had called to concede the race.
According to the Associated Press, as of 11 p.m., Sherrill led with 56% of the vote compared to Ciattarelli’s 43%.
“Governors have never mattered more!”
“In this state, I am determined to build prosperity for all of our citizens.”
Sherrill criticized the Trump administration’s actions that, in her view, cut crucial federal programs. She cited the reduction of food assistance for 42 million Americans, the halting of subsidies for the Affordable Care Act, and the cancellation of the Gateway tunnel project as examples of harmful policies.
She vowed to “fight for a different future in New Jersey,” emphasizing the role of state leadership in shaping economic and social progress.
Mikie Sherrill’s election victory speech marked a renewed call for state-level leadership focused on equality, prosperity, and resilience amid national political divides.
