AEFYT Warns of Ongoing Illegal HFC Trade in Spain

The Spanish refrigeration association, AEFYT, has alerted about the persistent illegal trade of refrigerants, notably the sale of banned R404A disguised as legal HFC blend substitutes.

Expansion of Illegal Market

AEFYT emphasizes that the illegal refrigerant market continues to grow, involving participants across the industry spectrum—from small and large installers to distributors who “launder” illegal products.

Common Illegal Practices

A frequent tactic is selling virgin R404A, banned since 2025, relabeled as lower GWP substitutes such as R448A, R449A, and R452A. These are often offered at suspiciously low prices.

Law Enforcement Actions

The Spanish Civil Guard’s Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) and customs officials have conducted inspections and taken samples of suspected refrigerants for analysis.

“The illegal refrigerant market has continued to expand, involving all levels of the industry.” — AEFYT

Recent raids led to the seizure of 53 tonnes of illegal refrigerant and nearly €1 million in cash by Spanish tax and customs authorities.

Recommendations to Buyers
